Cho Chikuns success
Cho Chikun, 9d advanced to 3rd round of Chunlan Cup in China! He is the only player from Japan who did it, besides him we can see two Koreans and five Chinese. Odds were against Cho, 9d as his opponent, Qiu Jun, 8d advanced to Samsung Cup finals by winning against Lee Chango, 9d last year. In the next round he will play Xie He, 7d, do you think he can win that? I think he can. I am a fan of Cho Chikun, 9d and am very happy he advanced this far. Maybe we will be able to see more players from Japan in World Tournaments now. Maybe even a champion from Japan?

Even though he did really well, I think his chances against Xie He are very slim. Qiu Jun has a specific style which Cho Chikun happened to fare well against, and actually it might be the same case with Kang Dongyun (and I actually really like both of them). But Xie He is in great form this year, and it's hard to believe Cho Chikun really improved much in the last year to be able to get a world title. I say 90% he'll be stopped in the next round.
It'll be nice to have Japan rise to the level of China and Korea, but it will take quite some time yet, if that happens imho.
